Hugo represented New Zealand’s Black Sticks across four Olympic cycles, with professional stints in India, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, before retiring after Paris 2024. Alongside his playing career he worked in banking and consulting, and completed a finance degree and an MBA with distinction at Edinburgh Business School. Since Paris he has been leading High Impact Athletes, a global movement of professional athletes backing the world’s best charities. They recently launched Sport One Carbon Zero, sports most impactful climate movements and their partnership with HYROX, Race for Impact, is growing rapidly: tens of thousands of athletes are raising millions of dollars through HIA’s peer-to-peer fundraising platform. HIA was recently named ISC Sports Startup of the Year and Hugo received the IOC Climate Action Award in 2026.
